Celebrating the Hands and Hearts Behind the Mission: Meet Our Volunteers

During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the heart and soul of the Alzheimer’s Association—the volunteers who give their time, talents, and compassion to help us move closer to a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. This week, we’re honored to spotlight Shananda Bond, a devoted volunteer with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s committee in Alaska.

For Shananda, the fight against Alzheimer’s is deeply personal. The disease runs in her family, and she has experienced the painful loss of one of the most influential people in her life to Alzheimer’s. That personal connection is what fuels her passion and commitment to raise awareness and support others on the journey.

“I’m always searching for ways to do more, and be of service,” Shananda says. “I want to help someone else learn and understand about Alzheimer’s and dementia and how we can help our loved ones.”

As a committee member for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Shananda plays a key role in organizing the signature fundraising event that brings communities together across Alaska. Whether helping plan the event, encouraging others to join, or sharing her personal story, she brings energy and purpose to every task.

When asked about a moment that stands out in her volunteer journey, Shananda says it’s the simple yet powerful connections that matter most. “Everything that we do is meaningful,” she shares, “but I will have to say, being able to share experiences and connect with someone learning about the cause is most meaningful.”

It’s this spirit of compassion and community that makes Shananda such a powerful force in the movement. Her hope for the future is grounded in action and momentum. “What gives me hope is the fight continues, research continues, funds continue, and the progress to end Alzheimer’s continues.”

Shananda, thank you for your dedication, your voice, and your heart. You inspire others to get involved and remind us that every effort—big or small—makes a difference.

This National Volunteer Week, we invite you to join Shananda and thousands of volunteers across the state who are making an impact. Whether it’s walking, advocating, educating, or supporting others—there’s a place for you in this fight.
